Creation of Laser Induced
Periodic Surface
Structure (LIPSS)
by ultrashort pulse laser
and its application
When a material is irradiated with laser, its surface geometry and chemical composition changes in various ways depending on the conditions. In particular, by irradiating materials with ultrashort pulse laser that goes from picoseconds to femtoseconds under specific conditions, a periodic and fine structure can be created on the surface of the material in a self-organized manner. The periodic and fine structure created by this method is called LIPSS (Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structure), and various functions can be added to the surface of the material according to its size, making it a very attractive structure.
Our laboratory combines experimental and analytical approaches to elucidate the self-organizing fine structure expression mechanism of LIPSS. In addition, the various geometric shapes created by LIPSS have the potential to express various functions such as “wettability”, “optical function”, and “tribology”, and research aimed at their practical use is also being conducted.
